The new hotel at the Union Station in Denver, Colorado has just been named after Dana Crawford. Who is this remarkable woman?

Dana Crawford was originally from Salinas, Kansas. She graduated at the University of Kansas and attended the Harvard-Radcliffe's Business Management Program. After graduate school, she moved to Denver in 1954 and was hired by a public relations company. It was the trend in 1960's to raze and level old building to make way for new construction. Mrs. Crawford saw the potential in preserving and redeveloping old neighborhoods. Under her leadership, Larimer Square Associates was formed. 

Dana spearheaded the improvement and conservation of Larimer Square in Lower Downtown Denver. Her success inspired more preservation work in LoDo, and she continued to select, preserve, and adapt significant buildings in deteriorating conditions. She pioneered the redevelopment of historical landmarks- from the Oxford Hotel to the Hungarian Flour Mill. A pioneer in the urban preservation movement, Crawford has been honored with the nation's highest award in historic preservation, the Louis du Pont Crowninshield Award. For more than thirty years, she has been the catalyst for Denver's urban revival and has inspired the return of vibrant activity to LoDo's streets.

Preservationist Dana Crawford has spent much of her life working to save the historic look of Lower Downtown, and now her name will live on in The Crawford Hotel, which is going into Union Station. Dana Crawford  is a partner in the project. She joined with the Union Station Alliance on its bid to get the contract to renovate Union Station.

"I sold a unit in the Flour Mill last year and I was not only impressed by the design and creativity Dana Crawford put into the Flour Mill building, but inspired to someday be apart of a historic preservation project in an urban area," says Barry Kunselman, a realtor specializing in Central Denver real estate.
