Longmont was founded in 1870 by the Chicago-Colorado Colony. As the Colorado Central Railroad line was built in 1877, much of the city began to prosper as an agricultural community. The town saw a shift from agriculture toward high-tech industries when IBM built a large facility on the outskirts of Longmont in the 1960s.
